Mayor opens new indoor camping accommodation

The Mayor of Newent Cllr. David Bick visited Yates Farm Malswick, the home of Tom Roberts Adventure Centre, on Wednesday 2nd.June 2010 to see for himself the progress made since camper and tents the last visit of a Mayor of Newent some 3 years ago. He was able to see all the facilities and meet a 32 strong a group of junior school age children and their leaders from Birmingham who were  staying at the farm on a week’s camp. He unveiled a plaque thanking Gloucestershire Environmental Trust for their generous grant of £12000 for major extensions to the centre.

TRAC is a Christian–based Adventure and Camping Centre which has been operating for the last 3 years providing outdoor camping primarily for organised youth groups. Over the last 5 years a small group of dedicated volunteers have been working twice a week 50 weeks of the years carrying out extensive works of renovations, improvements and extensions of old farm buildings.

Spring Bank Holiday week saw the handover of two ground floor rooms providing 12 bedspaces to add an  existing  room with  5 beds. The 17 beds are part  of larger complex due for completion by 2012.The centre will  then be able to host 36 campers indoors with dining room; kitchen  and  all the relevant toilets/and showers including provision for those who are wheelchair bound.

In addition the farm has the usual range of facilities for outdoor campers together with a Sports Barn- cum- all-weather facility, dining room and kitchen for 50 campers together with an assault course, zip line, football pitch, showers and toilets.

The Chairman of TRAC Mike Hencher said “countless thousands of hours of volunteer labour, donations of free materials and professional advice combined with cash gifts and grants have gone into making the centre a reality. However three grants, totalling £20000 received during 2009, including the £12000 from Gloucestershire Environmental Trust, have made an enormous difference.

Cllr. Blick was equally impressed “On behalf of the Town Council and the people of Newent I welcome the centre and look forward to watching its successful development. I was very impressed with the facilities and the work of the volunteers in achieving so much in a relatively short period of time
